Public Transportation and Atmospheric Pollution
Inspiration for the research project was a social media post discussing the pollution of the underground system of London is compared to other, international systems, prompting the question of if said pollution impacts amtmospheric, overground conditions.
This image is created using the coding language of python 3, with packages such as geopandas, pandas and OSMnx. It represent the walkability of a person to the two closest London Underground subway stations depending on what borough one is located in. Distance is measured in walking time, at a walking pace of 4.5 km/h.
The above three maps are visual representations of seperate Geographically Weigthed Regression (GWR) Models. To give a short summary of the results of this research projects, it was found that the more a borough emits PM2.5, the less it experiences PM2.5. Additional results are that less PM2.5 concentrations are found in boroughs with less underground stations. The fit of the GWR ranges from weak to medium, depending on borough.
